February 2004
Dear
Fellow Academicians of the Chapter of Radiologists
I’m
writing to all of you to update you of events that have taken
place over the past 6 months. This recent period has indeed
been very busy for the Academy as well as the Chapter.
First,
I’m glad to report that after our recent fellowship
drive, our ranks now stand at 109 Fellows in our Chapter.
This makes up approximately 75% of the Radiologists in Singapore.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend a very warm
welcome to all the new Chapter inductees.
The Chapter
also has been very involved on the professional front, and
together with the Singapore Radiological Society, has worked
on several professional guidelines. The following guidelines
are presently in press:
1. Guidelines
on Breast Biopsy Using Vacuum Assisted Devices (such as Mammotome)
2. Guidelines for Professional Responsibilities for PET-CT
Imaging
3. Guidelines on the Use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging in
Clinical Medicine
4. Clinical Practice Guidelines on Radiosurgery and Stereotactic
Radiotherapy
As
you all know, the 13th ASM of the Singapore Radiological Society
(SRS), co-organized by the Chapter, will be held soon from
the 21st to the 22nd of February. One of the highlights of
the programme will be the inauguration of the F Y Khoo Lecture.
The establishment of this annual lectureship, initiated by
both the Chapter and the SRS, is a signal of the coming of
age of our Radiological community. I attach the terms
of reference of this lectureship for your perusal.
Dr Chow
Khuen Wai, a very eminent member of our community and past
Master of the Academy, has kindly consented to deliver the
inaugural lecture (scheduled for 2.00pm on the 21st February).
I would like to encourage all of you to participate in this
year’s ASM and be present at this inaugural lecture.
On an
even more important note, I’m sure that all of you are
aware that the M&A of the Academy has been amended at
the last AGM to allow for the formation of Colleges. The Council
of the Academy and the respective Chapters have worked very
hard to come out with the proposed M&A of the Colleges
and an Academy EOGM is tentatively being called for on the
27th March 2004 to pass this.
The
Chapter has concurrently formed a subcommittee (Drs Chua Eu
Tiong, Anthony Goh, Tchoyoson Lim and Tan Bien Soo, with John
Hoe, representing SRS) to look into this and has been actively
feeding back issues pertinent to us Radiologists to the Council.
As this move will have significant impact on each of us, I
like to invite all of you to a dialogue and feedback session.
This will be held on the 26th February at 6.00pm, at the Conference
Room of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology, SGH. I have
also invited Master, Dr Satku, to attend this session and
to meet our Fellows and answer any queries you all will have
on this issue. Please fill in the attached form so that we
will have an indication for catering of refreshments. If you
are unable to attend this session and would like to bring
up any questions, please feel free to discuss this with any
of the subcommittee members or email us your questions. As
the aim of this move is to help us reconfigure so that the
College, when formed, can be better equipped to serve the
professional needs of all of you, the more we rigorously debate
this now the more robust the M&A
will be.
Thank
you very much for your time and attention. I look forward
to seeing you all at the ASM and the dialogue session.
Yours
sincerely
Dr Tan
Bien Soo
